Sifuna Furious After Sakaja Skips Senate Summon Amid Graft Allegations

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed frustration over Governor Johnson Sakaja’s failure to attend a summon by the senators.

The Senate’s County Public Accounts Committee had called upon Sakaja to respond to corruption allegations leveled against him by certain leaders within the county administration.

The governor was expected to appear before the committee on Monday, April 8, at the Shimba Hills Hall in the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) to address concerns outlined in the Auditor General’s Reports for the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 financial years.

However, a letter dated March 27 from the county secretary, Patrick Analo, informed the committee that the governor would be out of the country on the scheduled date.

Analo stated that the governor would be unable to attend the meeting scheduled on April 8 due to being out of the country, requesting the meeting to be rescheduled for a later date. He apologized for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sakaja’s absence to address pertinent financial issues affecting the county did not please Sifuna.

He expressed, “My governor was supposed to be before the Public Accounts Committee of the Senate this morning to discuss the Auditor General’s Reports for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 financial years. They are both adverse reports. 2022-2023 too. Guess who is out of the country.”

Sakaja has, however, been criticized for missing summons by the senate. In a recent incident, the senator and the governor engaged in a battle of words when Sakaja appeared before the Senate Committee on Roads, Transport, and Housing.

Sifuna consistently accused Sakaja of disrespecting the county members whenever he rose to answer questions raised by the senators.

The ODM secretary-general further accused the governor of mismanaging the county through his constant snubbing of summons to address significant issues affecting the county.
