Speaker Wetang’ula warns Natembeya over attacks
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, during a funds drive at Bulimbo Catholic Church in Kakamega, yesterday, dismissed TransNzoia Governor George Natembeya for his continued attacks.
Wetang’ula maintained that the divisions Natembeya is creating would cause more harm for the Luhya community come 2027.
He expressed concern that such conflicts would hinder the community from garnering support from other ethnic groups. Wetang’ula stressed the importance of unity, stating, “As a region we want to be somewhere come 2027, but it will be impossible to even convince other communities to support us if we continue fighting among each other. We want a community to speak in one voice.”
Despite the growing discord between him and Natembeya, stemming from a burial incident, Wetang’ula emphasized that politicians engaging in physical altercations would face judgment from the electorate.
He urged political leaders to refocus their efforts on serving Kenyans, highlighting that leaders are elected to serve, not by chance, but by the will of voters.
Wetang’ula reminded leaders that the privilege to serve citizens is bestowed upon them by the electorate, stressing the importance of conducting themselves with decorum and respect if entrusted with positions of power.
Natembeya has been vocal in his criticism of Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, accusing them of not using their positions to benefit the Luyha community as promised.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, weighing in on the matter, urged Wetang’ula not to shy away from engaging with leaders and locals in the unity drive.
Barasa, the chairman of Western MPs, pledged to rally all legislators behind Wetang’ula, asserting, “When Dr. Ruto exits power in 2032, you take over from him.”
Meanwhile, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka called for the establishment of a formidable caucus in the Western region to foster socio-economic advancement.
Natembeya, on the other hand, has intensified his attacks on Wetang’ula and Mudavadi, who are regarded as senior politicians in Western Kenya.
