Tanzania Bans Nairobi-Dar Es Salaam Flights After Cargo Dispute

Flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam will be banned by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority starting January 22, 2024.

This decision was made in response to Kenya’s denial of Tanzania’s request for all-cargo flight operations by Air Tanzania Company Limited. Hamza Johari, the Director General of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, emphasized in an official statement on Monday that the ban specifically pertains to passenger flights conducted by Kenya Airways (KQ) under Third and Fourth Freedom Traffic Rights.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and his Tanzanian counterpart January Makamba are actively engaged in resolving the issue within a three-day timeframe.

“We have jointly agreed that our respective Civil Aviation Authorities will work together to have the matter resolved amicably within the next three days,” Mudavadi said Monday after a telephone talk with his counterpart who equally tweeted saying there should be no cause for alarm.

Johari clarified that the decision to implement this measure was driven by Kenya’s denial of granting Air Tanzania Company Limited all-cargo flight operations under Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights.

This action was perceived as a violation of Section 4 of the Memorandum of Understanding on Air Services, signed between Tanzania and Kenya on November 24, 2016, in Nairobi.

Consequently, starting January 22, 2024, passenger flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, operated by Kenya Airways (KQ), will be discontinued due to the imposed ban.

This move is anticipated to have substantial implications in both nations, and it is noteworthy that this is not the first instance where Tanzania has enacted such a ban.
