Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah’s rural home experienced an attack last Wednesday from unidentified individuals, resulting in injury to one of his relatives.
This incident adds to numerous other attempts aimed at causing him harm, with the most severe occurring in 2012 when he faced a brutal assault along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi, resulting in the loss of some teeth.
Assailants assaulted Senator Omtatah last month as he was returning home from the Busia Law Courts, where he had attended a case against the Busia County Government.
He had filed the lawsuit in his pursuit to obtain certain county documents necessary for his oversight role in safeguarding public property and rights.
Senator Omtatah is a well-known figure in Kenya, renowned for his advocacy for the rights of ordinary citizens.
He frequently resorts to legal action to protect public rights when he perceives them to be under threat, either from individuals or the government.
As a private litigator, Omtatah has secured numerous victories, much to the public’s satisfaction.
Although the public hails Omtatah as a hero, his courageous efforts to combat corruption within and outside the government have amassed adversaries who feel threatened.
In July of the previous year, unidentified persons burglarized his office in Busia, absconding with computers and other electronic devices.
Additionally, Omtatah has reported several instances of threats to his life.
In December of the 2023, the senator accused the president of issuing death threats against him and others objected to the Housing Levy.
He claimed that the president had stated he would eradicate those opposing his policies, including the Housing Levy.
Omtatah saw this statement as a direct threat to those who disagreed with the President’s policies, but police officers at the Mosocho Police Station in Kisii County blocked his attempt to report the alleged threat.
It is therefore evident that if any harm befalls Omtatah, the government will inevitably be among the primary suspects.
It is imperative for the government to ensure the senator’s safety by all means necessary. Moreover, law enforcement must conduct thorough investigations and apprehend those responsible for the nocturnal assault and other attacks on the senator and his property.
