UDA Mp Puts Governer Waiguru on the Spot Over Kirinyaga deaths
Kirinyaga Women Representative Njeri Maina has criticized the county liquor licensing board for the tragic loss of 10 lives in the Kangai area, attributing it to their inability to control illicit businesses within the county.
Holding Governor Anne Waiguru accountable, Njeri urged for expedited alcohol regulations, emphasizing that ineffective administrative structures are responsible for situations where residents resort to self-initiated actions.
“The county must vet bar owners exhaustively and revoke licenses in instances where requirements are not met,” she stated.
Pointing out the dangerous closeness of alcohol outlets to schools, places of worship, and residential neighborhoods, the UDA Member of Parliament urged Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to take decisive action against corrupt and negligent local authorities.
While the MP expressed disapproval of the arson targeting the local pub, she justified the actions of Kangai residents in holding the bar owner accountable for the tragic loss of 10 lives.
She emphasized that county leaders would intervene to address the issue of illegal businesses.
“I am proud of the Kangai community, not for burning down the bar where the illicit alcohol was sold but for taking action. Action that they deemed necessary when our systems failed,” she added.
Njeri also extended her condolences to the families of the deceased, encouraging community members to come together and address the issue of illicit alcohol at its roots.
“I do not support anarchy, by the mere fact that I am a trained lawyer and understand the consequences of a spiral down that road,” she stated.
Furious residents on Wednesday, February 7, set fire to a bar accused of selling expired alcohol, demanding the immediate removal of the local police and area chief for neglecting their responsibilities to maintain order and safety in the community.
Ten individuals tragically lost their lives, with five others experiencing loss of eyesight, reportedly due to consuming an illicit brew containing ethanol.
Multiple government agencies have initiated investigations to root out illegally operating businesses, spurred by recent incidents resulting in loss of life.
In response, Anthony Omerikwa, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), announced that investigations had been initiated to enhance efforts in cracking down on substandard, illicit, and counterfeit alcohol.
