What Fearless Kenyan Preacher Told President William Ruto To His Face
Prominent Kenyan clergyman Reverend Sammy Wainaina, serving as the Adviser on Anglican Communion Affairs in London, has stirred controversy within Kenya’s political circles by expressing strong criticisms of ineffective leadership.
In a passionate sermon delivered at ACK All Saints Cathedral on Sunday, December 17, Reverend Sammy Wainaina openly denounced Kenya’s Parliament, the Opposition, and the Church, accusing them of maintaining silence while the ruling class led the country astray.
Expressing his dismay, Reverend Sammy Wainaina criticized the current government for its inadequate efforts in addressing the escalating issue of corruption.
While reflecting on his international travels as part of his new role in the UK, he raised questions about the frequent national power outages, highlighting that such failures have revealed the shortcomings of leaders who campaigned on the platform of Christianity.
“I hear Kenya Power and Lighting has become Kenya Power and Darkness. Now, you want to spend billions to unbundle power lines. This is corruption after corruption in a government that looked very Christian.
“I remember telling them not to hide behind Christianity. Christianity is being men and women of integrity. You cannot use Christ to get into power and become a corrupt leader when you get there,” Wainaina retorted.
Wainaina did not hold back in his critique of the country’s Opposition, accusing it of being feeble and unresponsive at a crucial time when the voice of the Kenyan people was most needed.
“The context in Kenya is becoming even sadder with the weakening of the Opposition. While we should have a powerful opposition to check on the government, it is getting weaker, and we cannot hear the voice of parliament when there are schemes to silence people,” he observed.
In an apparent reference to President William Ruto’s remarks regarding the courts’ declaration of the controversial Housing Levy as unconstitutional, Wainaina expressed his disapproval, stating that it was disgraceful for leaders to threaten Kenyans and attempt to encroach upon their fundamental freedoms.
“The other day, I read of someone threatening Kenyans from challenging issues in the courts. Kenyans have the right to file matters in court, and political leaders must not threaten Kenyans. They are in power because we voted for them and are there as servants, not bosses, no threats,” the cleric stated.
The preacher also took the church to task for neglecting its responsibility to speak truth to power. He warned that the institution’s silence on pertinent issues could pave the way for corruption to infiltrate and undermine its integrity.
“Even sadder is that the voice of the church has been silenced. Unfortunately, the church seems to be in bed with the government. They cannot challenge the government. They have become recipients of government appointments and recognition, which is dangerous. If not careful, corruption will permeate every part of the church,” continued Wainaina in the viral sermon on social media.
Wainaina asserted that All Saints Cathedral had a reputation as a place of agitation, and he emphasized that, following in the footsteps of former archbishops and provosts, the church would persist in using the pulpit to speak truth to those in positions of power.
Fearlessly, Wainaina directly criticized Ruto for neglecting to address the adverse effects of the high cost of living that his administration had imposed on the Kenyan population.
